Murder, suicide cases worry police
Northern Region Commissioner of police Martha Suwedi has lamented murder and suicide cases which are on the rise in the region.
She said this after a court marshal committed suicide over the weekend.
Speaking in an interview on Monday, Suwedi said it is worrying to note that the region records murder and suicide cases almost every two days.
Suwedi advised the public to stop committing suicide and killing each other, saying such acts affect the development of the country and create a generation of orphans.
She urged people facing problems to consult leaders in society or the police. She said taking away one’s life or someone else’s is not a solution but the beginning of bigger problems.
“People should learn to resolve matters reasonably other than taking away lives. We are leaving a number of people in pain and creating a generation of orphans,” said Suwedi.
Mzuzu Police spokesperson Martin Bwanali identified the court marshal as Apollo Chavinda, 32, of Mdakata Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chindi in Mzimba District.
He said Chavinda hanged himself in his house when his wife went to the hospital to cheer a patient. Police are yet to establish what happened.
Post-mortem conducted by Mzuzu Central Hospital showed that death was due to suffocation. n
